Quitting is Not Always a Bad Thing…
Quitting is often associated with negativity, yet that could not be further from the truth when it enhances your life for the better. Now you may be asking yourself, “how is quitting something going to help me???”. Well, we’re glad you asked! This concept can be applied to business leaders, startups, small businesses, college students, etc… Anybody can benefit from this concept of quitting the thing which are holding you back from your full potential. Read on to learn more about how when you quit the things which are bringing you down, you’ll most likely end up going up in all aspects of your life.
Quit Watching TV
Ah, the good ol’ television. Once a purely innovative machine dedicated to providing an alternative outlook for people all around the world to tune in to, yet nowadays, it’s more of a time suck than anything else, ultimately filled with negativity. If you turn on the majority of cable television channels, you’ll find yourself intertwined with the latest gossip, negative news, and trashy reality television designed to turn you into a couch potato. Quit watching television and you’ll notice the free time throughout your day increase exponentially. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, between the years of 2013-2017, the average American watched roughly 2 hours and 46 minutes of television per day! That figure equates to nearly 20 hours of television watched per week, or the equivalent of a part-time job! Even if you were to work an average minimum wage job at $15/hour or so, you’d be pulling in $300/week which is $1,200/month pre-tax. That adds up to $14,400/year. That money could help with a number of expenses, vacations, savings, etc… ; all from stopping your viewership of television every day.
It’s also important to examine the lost opportunity cost from simply sitting on your couch and wasting the evening away. Let’s say you were to go for a nice hike in your favorite park instead of sitting in front of the television. You’d be in open nature, soaking up sun, breathing fresh air, and possibly make a new friend who shares similar interests if you happen to encounter them on the hiking trail. There are so many things to do in the outside world which you’d miss if you were to simply lounge in on the couch all day watching television.
Quit Saying “Yes!” to Everything
This may seem counterintuitive, yet people who say “yes!” to everything which comes across their desk often end up in situations where they have very limited time left over each and every day. Quit saying “yes!” and start saying “no!” if there isn’t an opportunity to grow from the experience. Now this is not to say you should just automatically turn down everything; no, that’s not what we’re saying. What we’re saying is to discern what’s important and what is not important when you give up your precious time each day. We’re only here for a limited amount of time on Earth (as far as we know), so let’s make the most out of each and every day by utilizing our time appropriately by quitting the act of being a “yes man”.
Quit Filling the Time with Busy Work
”I’m so busy!” is what many people say when they’re actually simply filling the time with busy work. What this means is they’re finding easy, simple ways to fill up the first hour fo their day, then the next hour, then the hour after that. Before they know it, the whole day has flown by and they’ve only accomplished one or two items on their to-do list. This is not the way to work at all. One of the many ways to work is a style called “deep work” where you focus on a main task until it’s completed, no matter what. Now, this style of work can be difficult for some to achieve at first, yet when you capture the essence of what “deep work” is, you’ll often find yourself in a “flow state” where the creative energy needed to complete the task at hand is flowing out of you like a fresh stream of water. This takes some practice, yet it’s something we can all eventually achieve with persistence and commitment to the methodologies listed above.
Quit Driving to Work if You Can Work Remotely
Driving to work wastes a whole lot of time. According to the New York Post, the average American wastes 19 full work days each year sitting around in traffic. That is crazy! That figure is more than most people have for vacation time. Not only is it a waste of time, it’s also quite expensive when you add it up over the year based on your individual commute distance. Working remotely allows you to avoid the terrible stress which traffic causes, reduce wasted time in the morning and evening, increase productivity levels due to having a clear head, and save money on gas and other miscellaneous auto expenses. All in all, remote work can be one of the best ways to optimize productivity and help you quit wasting time commuting back and forth between your home and the office.
Quit Partying All the Time
Partying may be fun for some, yet it’s ultimately one of the biggest wastes of time, money, and the following day’s productivity levels (think of the hangovers you could avoid…) Let’s examine the time wasted. Yes, you may meet some new friends which may lead to new doors opening in the future, yet the majority of the energy amongst a party crowd is not the most positive. It’s often better to develop friendships and relationships through much more positive activities where mood-altering substances aren’t involved. Oftentimes, the conversations held within a general party environment are mainly fluff and will ultimately be a waste of time throughout the grand journey of life.
Now, let’s examine the money wasted. Yes, quitting partying will most likely save you a ton of money. Having more money is always better than having less money. Quitting partying could end up saving you thousands of dollars each year. This can eventually add up to be some serious cash saved over a few years if you avoid spending money each and every weekend as some heavily partying individuals choose to do.
Finally, let’s examine the lost productivity levels the day after. Everyone who parties regularly knows very well about the hangovers one can experience the day after. This can literally lead to an entire day lost to feelings of malaise. Usually, you end up eating a greasy brunch, nothing on your to-do list ends up completed, and you feel like absolute garbage; all for what? Yeah, that’s right; not much at all. Altogether, quitting partying can only do good for your overall progression in life.
Quit Telling Yourself “I’ll do it tomorrow…”
Procrastination is a true killer of potential success. Telling yourself you’ll just finish it later will just prolong the inevitable. Take control of your life and be the boss of your day. If it takes less than five minutes to complete, just do it. You’ll thank yourself later. Quit procrastinating and you’ll live a much more productive life.
