A personal injury firm hired us after getting burned by their previous agency. The pitch had been irresistible: "We guarantee page one rankings for 'personal injury lawyer Austin' within 90 days or your money back."
The agency delivered on the guarantee. Sort of. At the 90-day mark, the firm was ranking on page one — for "personal injury lawyer Austin TX free consultation near downtown area." A keyword nobody searches for. The agency had technically fulfilled the contract while delivering zero actual business value.
The firm had also been paying $2,500/month for 14 months before they realized the traffic from their "guaranteed" rankings was generating exactly zero client inquiries. That's $35,000 spent on a guarantee that was designed to be met on paper and worthless in practice.
This story isn't unusual. We hear some version of it three or four times a year. An agency promises guaranteed rankings, a business owner — reasonably — finds the certainty appealing, and the guarantee turns out to be either meaningless, impossible to verify, or backed by tactics that eventually cause more damage than they're worth.
We don't guarantee rankings. Not because we're not confident in our work — our case studies speak for themselves — but because guaranteeing a specific ranking position requires either lying or controlling something we don't control.
Google's algorithm considers over 200 ranking factors. It updates multiple times per day. Core updates can shift entire industries overnight. A competitor can launch a better page tomorrow. A link profile can change. User behavior can shift. We control the inputs — the quality of the content, the technical health of the site, the link building strategy, the on-page optimization. We don't control the output — where Google decides to rank any specific page on any specific day.
Any agency claiming they can guarantee where Google will rank you is claiming to control Google's algorithm. That's not confidence. It's dishonesty.
Google's own documentation explicitly warns about SEO agencies that guarantee rankings. This isn't an industry opinion — it's guidance directly from the company that runs the search engine:
No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a "special relationship" with Google, or advertise a "priority submit" to Google.
— Google Search Central Documentation, "Do you need an SEO?"When the company that determines rankings tells you nobody can guarantee them, that should settle the question. But the guarantee pitch persists because it works on people who don't know better — which is exactly why this article exists.
Not every guaranteed SEO pitch is the same. Here are the most common patterns, and why each one is either deceptive or dangerous:
We explain it to clients this way: imagine going to a cardiologist who says, "I guarantee you'll never have a heart attack." Would you trust that doctor more than one who says, "Based on your risk factors, here's a treatment plan that will significantly reduce your risk — but I can't control every variable"?
The first doctor is telling you what you want to hear. The second doctor is telling you the truth. You'd trust the second one with your health — and you should trust the equivalent with your marketing.
An honest SEO agency says: "Based on your competitive landscape, your current domain authority, and the quality of your site, here's what we believe we can accomplish in 6–12 months, and here's the strategy we'll use to get there. We can't guarantee position #1 because Google controls that decision — but we can guarantee the quality and consistency of our work, and we can show you case studies of similar clients who achieved similar goals."
That's not a lesser commitment. It's a more honest one.
If you're evaluating an SEO agency, watch for these warning signs. Click each one to check it off — the more boxes checked, the faster you should walk away:
If guaranteeing rankings is dishonest, what should a legitimate agency promise? Here's what we commit to — and what you should expect from any agency worth hiring:
For law firms, financial advisors, and healthcare practices, the "guaranteed SEO" trap carries an additional layer of risk: compliance exposure.
An agency using black-hat tactics — hidden links, cloaked pages, spammy directories — on a medical practice website can create regulatory problems beyond SEO. If those links come from disreputable sites, if hidden content violates advertising regulations, or if manipulative tactics lead to a Google penalty that takes down your site during a compliance audit, the business consequences extend far beyond lost traffic.
We've onboarded clients whose previous "guaranteed SEO" agency had placed links on gambling sites, adult directories, and foreign-language spam blogs — all pointing to a healthcare practice's website. Cleaning that up required a comprehensive link disavowal, a reconsideration request, and six months of recovery work. The "guaranteed" rankings were long gone by then.
Before hiring any SEO agency, ask: "Can you walk me through every type of link you build and every tactic you use?" A legitimate agency will explain their strategy in detail — guest posts on relevant publications, directory listings, content marketing, digital PR. An agency using risky tactics will be vague, dismissive, or tell you "that's proprietary." If they can't explain it, they know you wouldn't approve it.
We tell every prospective client the same thing: we can't guarantee where Google will rank you. Nobody can. What we can guarantee is the quality, consistency, and strategic rigor of the work itself.
We guarantee that every piece of content will be original, expert-reviewed, and written for your specific audience. We guarantee that our technical work will follow best practices and be documented. We guarantee transparent reporting on a fixed schedule. We guarantee that you own every asset we create. And we guarantee that if our strategy isn't producing results after a reasonable timeline, we'll diagnose why and adjust — not hide behind a contract clause.
The honest trade-off: Guaranteed rankings feel safe. But the guarantee is almost always either deceptive (junk keywords, impossible refund conditions) or dangerous (black-hat tactics that create future penalties). An agency that's honest about what they can and can't control is an agency that respects your intelligence and your business. That honesty is worth more than a guarantee that was never real in the first place.
If an agency guarantees SEO rankings, they're telling you one of three things: they plan to rank you for keywords nobody searches for, they plan to use tactics that risk penalizing your site, or their guarantee has conditions so restrictive that it's meaningless. None of those outcomes are worth your money.
SEO is an investment in building genuine authority, quality content, and technical excellence. Those investments compound over time and produce real business results — clients, patients, revenue. But they can't be guaranteed on a specific timeline any more than a financial advisor can guarantee a specific stock return.
What you should demand from an SEO agency is competence, transparency, communication, and a track record of delivering results for businesses like yours. Those things are verifiable. Those things are real. And those things matter infinitely more than a guarantee printed on a contract.
